| Soil erosion and rising sea levels at Kattem, Baina, on Wednesday led to Mormugao deputy collector Gourish Sankhwalkar visiting the area and issuing notices to residents to vacate their houses. "The situation is bad. I am told by them (residents) that this is the first time they are facing such a situation," Sankhwalkar told TOI. The notices were issued to 35 households after residents of the area panicked due to a rise in water level and feared that ingression of water could lead to their houses collapsing. "Sand has been washed away and some 5 to 6 coconut trees have been uprooted," Sankhwalkar, who has sent a report on the matter to the South Goa collector for necessary action, said. Officials of the water resources department are expected to visit the site on Thursday. On Wednesday morning, two coconut trees were uprooted after waves swept away earth on Tuesday night. The sea water reached approximately 100 meters towards the houses. Sankhwalkar said, "The foundations of the houses are vulnerable to the sea waves, and there is a possibility of their collapse if the water level remains the same." A fishing boat was washed away and also some water tanks and outdoor toilets, even as residents of the area were busy salvaging whatever property they could since 3am on Wednesday, Baina fishermen association former president Prakash Gawane said. Locals also undertook some temporary safety measures and filled sacks with mud and placed them along the seaside to act as a barrier to the rising water level. Lalita Chalwadi, a resident, said they have been keeping awake the last few night fearing the rising waters. The residents had been warned of possible rise in water level by the authorities. | |
